Hello everyone I just bought my first bike in years. Its a 88 Yamaha FZ 750 that has been sitting for 3 yrs and during that time took a slow tumble off a trailer and landed wheels up so there is some minor plastics damage. Otherwise it looks fine. I'm sure I'll need some advice along the way but, I guess that's all part of it. I'll come back and post pics later.

IF it has been sitting for 3 years, first thing is drain all gas out of tank and carbs. Check condition of the inside of the tank. If no rust, put fresh gas and see if it runs. I'd add some seafoam to the fresh gas also. Check the plugs, replace if needed.

I'm sure others will chime in with more ideas.

I've come across a couple of good used-part suppliers on NESBA.com.  Lately, I've needed a few of my own *cough*.   gunfight

Howdy from Hueytown. Yep what JR said and change ALL fluids (brake fluid too. After 3 years it needs changing) before taking it any where. While your at it check the tires and brake lines for ANY cracking, worn spots, etc...etc. If you see any replace it.
Give the bike a really good lookie see. Will it need brake pads? New tires? Are the cables (brake, throttle etc) in good condition? Do they move freely? Do the cables need to be lube? (The answer is yes after 3 years of sitting) do the wheels need the bearings greased? Grease everything that has a grease fitting and check the grease fitting to see if its froze up. (If it is it will not allow grease to get in replace them if they are. Zerck fittings are cheap.)
If the bike cranks, its got brakes, and the tires are good, take it for a spin. Slow and easy at first, 10-20 miles an hour or so at first. If everything thing is cool build your speed up. Then if everything is good go some where you can go 50, 60, 70, safely. If there is any problem (handle bars shake (that means the head, steering bearings need to be checked) brakes fade etc...etc.) head for home.
If no problems then ride your new to you bike.
 Oh yea and have fun!

Springer said it best! Check everything and take your time! Things can go bad in 3 years, for that matter things can go bad in 3 months.
take you time and post any questions if you need help. Then we will put some miles on it!

Welcome from Clay, Alabama.   Follow Springer's advice on the other post on checking the switches.   If you have a volt/ohm meter and a manual you can find the problem pretty easily (at least that problem).   You may have multiple issues.   If you are going to keep the bike, buy a manual.   That is the best piece of advice anyone can give you.

Hoep you get her running soon and join us on some rides.
