This morning on the way to work, I slipped on ice coming around a corner at the Shell station on Hwy 78 where it parallels I-20 near Old Leeds Road.  It was the thinnest, most transparent layer of ice I've ever seen but it looked like a vehicle dropped water onto the road or everything around it had dried already.  By the time I saw it, I was doing 50 around the curve to the right.  I counter steered to try to put the front on the right side of it and did but the back wheel caught it and came around to my left side.  As I was thinking about how I was going to land and the fact that I just got this %@#in' thing back together, I found myself in a half-stance leaning into the slide.  That's the makin's for a high side crash.  Plus, I'd have beaten the bike down to the pavement and probably had my head taken off by it.  Thankfully there was wet pavement at the end of the slick because instead of the tire grabbing and the bike throwing me like a catapult, the catch was gradual as the tire reduced it's movement forward.  As I felt it come back around I just sat back down and throttled it back up.  I was consistent on the throttle throughout this few-second non-incident, and I never let off until I felt the rear end lining back up. 

I don't honestly know if I did the right thing, but by a stroke of luck or blessing, It was just the other side of a standard rear-wheel slide.  Coffee has nothing on a scare like that for wakin' a fool up.  I don't recommend the half-stance in a slide on a 375lb  sportbike.  I don't know that I'd do that again.  I didn't think about it until it was over.

I know better.  I got what I call a short ride in yesterday with OOTS and a couple of Florabama riders and I knew it was cold this morning but I was jack-assin' on the way in.  It just feels too good to be back on it.  I don't wanna' go through no-bike-time again anytime soon.

Welcome to riding experience. You never know what's around the next corner. Glad you made it through without road rash.

 I pretty sure you marked that spot in the permanent memory and avoid it next time. Even when it's warm it will probably be a puddle.

Close calls are an everyday thing on a bike.

Glad ya kept it under ya!  A bit of saddle re upholstery is a small price to pay!
Thats not far from where i work and I know what ya mean, there are several spots around here that can be twitchy.
