Since I've moved south a few years ago, I noticed that you all keep riding even with the temp goes below 30.  That's great, that's one of the reason's why I moved down here.  But I've also noticed you all tend to bulk up on the outside to stay warm. To me I feel this could cause problems with control of  your bike.

I have another suggestion.  www.wintersilks.com This is washable breathable silk long johns. And they come in different weights for those who are very cold blooded and those who just want a little extra.  Believe me it's warm.  I took two sets with me to Stockholm 4 years ago in February.  They also have silk glove liners and silk socks you put on under you regular socks.  It's warm without being bulky.

When I trained my Dressage Horse up north, it didn't matter how cold it was, you had to train everyday.  I put these on under my riding gear and I was very warm without the extra bulk.  They have items for both men and woman, And in some items even comes in BLACK for those who won't wear any other color.  And they don't look like long underwear.  The shirts look like a long sleeve T-shirt and could be worn as such.

With these on under you regular clothes and then your regular road gear, you should be good and toasty.

Just my thought.  It's what I wear.

Silk long-johns...they better come with a warning label.  I have a pair of silk boxers that I break out in my "Wrassel Castle" with the mood strikes.  I can just hear it now, "Is that a crescent wrench in your pocket or you just happy to see me."

Back to the serious nature of the reply....great suggestion.  Wicking is the key to warmth without the bulk.

If you think about it, cold weather is the best time to ride. No bugs, can wear your gear (and thats a comforting thought with all the idiot cagers out there), you're not burning up (easier to keep warm than cool) and you have the benefit of having people look at you like you are crazy! Also, the bike LOVES cold weather!  For under $400 I have Tourmaster riding pants and jacket which if you try putting them on in the house you could spontaneously combust, balaclava good for -20 degrees, and Gerbin electric gloves.

I like the idea of the silks and I'll try them. The jacket and pants I use work well but they are bulky. Thanks

Thanx for the advice. I will try it, since I am one of the Michelin men you see on the road sometimes.
