A new law goes into effect today requiring drivers to change lanes or slow down if any emergency vehicle - not just law enforcement - is pulled off on the side of the road.
"It will make it safer for all emergency personnel," said Huntsville police Sgt. Mark Roberts.
Previously known as the "Blue Light" law, it is now generally called the "Move Over" law and includes any vehicle with flashing emergency lights, including ambulances, fire trucks and wreckers.
The law states that on four-lane highways, drivers must move over a lane when a vehicle equipped with flashing emergency lights is pulled off on the side of the road.
If drivers aren't able to change lanes, they will be required to slow down to 15 mph below the posted speed limit. On two-lane roads, drivers will only be required to follow the slow-down rule.
If caught breaking the new law, drivers will receive a $25 fine, plus court costs, which vary from county to county but routinely run about $100. With each additional violation, the fines will increase.
Officers have been issuing warnings since the law was passed last spring, but ticketing for violations can begin today.
For the most part, Roberts said, Huntsville citizens move over when able if emergency crews are on the shoulder of the road.
Roberts said the law meets two needs. It requires motorists to slow down, which addresses the safety concern, and it educates the public on the importance of slowing down or changing lanes when emergency workers are doing their jobs on the side of the road, he said.
"We've had officers injured in the past by working traffic scenes so, hopefully, this new law will help to decrease those types of incidents in Huntsville and across the state for all emergency personnel, not just the police department," Roberts said. -from The Huntsville Times

Uhm... the cop tried to block traffic in front of a fucking semi truck without taking into consideration the blind-view of the cars behind him??? i have seen cops do some REALLY crazy, stupid stuff, that makes me wonder, did they go to the Barny Fife Academy.......... I saw a state trooper stop in the only lane of traffic to talk(out his passenger window) to a motorist that stalled his car (who had enough sense to move his car behind some barrels) he just stopped, one lane, Interstate, no lights..............just stopped. obviously, the other four vehicles and I were paying more attention than he was...........all of us slammed brakes which is the only reason he got to go home that night............ if i had a dash-cam, it would have been on the news that night---- "STATE TROOPER SUSPENDED after video reveals how stupid he is" |

I had a realization today. In the situation where a Trooper is on the side of the interstate, lights on, protecting highway workers, this law applies. Today I was on 459 near the Galleria. They had posted the speed limit down to 40. The interstate was squeezed down to 2 lanes, since one was closed. So, you had to move into the far left lane to go 40, otherwise, you were supposed to drop it down to 25 if you couldn't get into the left lane. There were 2 troopers in the area and I think one had radar. So, you tell me...40 in the fast lane and 25 in the other lane...SAFE? REALLY?  |

It may have been a local law in some places, but it's a new STATE law. Previously, it was just a recommendation, not a finable offense.

thank God for this law. alabama lawmakers finally do something right. you dont know how many times i see idiots just blow right by people working on side of the road, or don't stop for ambulances/emergency vehicles trying to get to somewhere. like my friend said who was a yankee, 'the people here will stop for someone dead but won't for ambulances trying to save people's lives.' makes you think.
and the STUPID police lights should be outlawed, how many freaking strobe lights do you need on your car, you cant even see the people working a scene for the stupid lights! BAN THEM !!!!
