RIP - alsportbike.com - alabamasportbike.com
« on: April 01, 2013, 12:51:32 PM »

They announced earlier this month they would be going offline today.  From what I gathered it was due to lack of interest and participation from members, declining membership and other factors.  There was some mention about a period of hurt feelings, possibly similar to what we have experienced recently, and maybe that had something to do with the changes in activity.  I have been a member since shortly after discovering their existence (pretty sure they started around the same time we did in '07).  Even went on a few rides with them.  Seemed like a pretty tight group that even had a good amount of activity in other parts of the state.

Mostly a younger group, I am sure that life-changes altered membership as much as anything else.  As many of you folks have experienced, most likely at some point in your life motorcycles have taken a back seat to career, family, etc.  Those things tend to happen more when you are younger, as this crowd was most certainly a younger crowd.  I am curious about the effects the hurt feelings had on the group, and where they came from, and what could have been done to avoid them.  I know I have made plenty of mistakes since our beginning, and will make plenty more, but I would certainly like to avoid the major pitfalls if they are identifiable.

I did log in a few days back to offer a new home, and a place to communicate, as we do have a mostly un-used sport-bike board that might work really well for what remains of the community.  There was talk of an existing  Facebook page, and even an offer to extend/archive the community from another member.  But I think it is dead.

That make me sad.

Sad that folks will lose something important in their lives, and sad they could not fix what was broken.  I hope a few more find their way here, at least they can find each other HERE if they are semi-active at all.   {59}

They moved to a closed Facebook group, I think.

i really hope the facebook generation realizes their mistake before the last tutorial, video, and ride report is published on the REAL internet, and all their Facebook approved Bitcoins implode on them.

Things are going to get better on here. The weather is warming up. I know I'll be riding more (as I believe everyone will) and that will give me less time for bitching. I'm going to miss that though, I'm quite good at bitching.   :)

bitcoins are a form of digital currency.  FB doesnt use bitcoins for anything that I am aware of... I think the comment was just a joke.

I have a sportbike ride I am leading today.  Meeting 2 new guys that are local.  Found them on a Kawi board vs here or alsportbike.com. I will turn them on to this site and pimp it.

It is odd and frustrating that the sportbike crowd here is limited.  The dead website was crickets for at least a year as well.

One odd theory I have is that the age of a lot if sportbike riders is a generation gap vs the members here.......and as many stated, they use alt media to communicate.  A pic on Facebook = a ride report maybe?

I hate FB, to me it's narcissism at its highest in many cases.

nail on the head, sir.

and someday, when facedbook finally dies (like myspace), all those people that linked to it for videos, photos, and information (ha!) will see how idiotic it was to do.

it takes more balls to give a real insight into a days (weeks?) ride than to post an instacrap picture with a trendy caption.

please, by all means post up in the "let's ride" or even "planned rides" sections and then follow up with a ride report. doesn't have to be 30 minutes of commentary or video, just take us with you !

Hear! Hear! Kyle speaks wisdom!

I loved the years and rides and miles I did on sportbikes/track days, etc. I now enjoy the DS world more.
That said, I hope to see the sportbike group here grow and build a bigger presence.

BR, with whatever warts it might have in any particular individuals eyes, is IMO, the best virtual place around for connecting with, and staying connected with, riders of all types.

FB has become such a bother. It was once a fine place to share little, interesting nuggets from life with friends and family.
It seems to have BECOME LIFE for so many people.
I grow weary of it. Would almost grin with satisfaction if it all shut down tomorrow.

So ride on sportbike guys! And solicit the crowd to get more of your riding buddies active here.
